Young Team Fills Herts With Pride

The unsettled weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 40 girls gathered together at Aldenham Golf Club to play scratch match play in 2008’s Junior County Match Week.Hertfordshire played host to teams from Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

Some marvellous golf was played and some very tight matches ensued.

The team for Herts consisted of :-

Stephanie McEvoy,Captain Old Fold
Emily Chan South Herts
Hollie Gardner Old Fold
Lara Cornell Mid-Herts
Nicola Callander Mill Green
Laura Roff Ashridge
Farah Ahyauddin Welwyn Garden City
Ella Ofstedahl Mill Green

Two late injuries deprived Herts of 2 strong, single figure players and left us with an inexperienced, very young team (the youngest being just 10 years old)!

All that was forgotten however once battle commenced. To Herts’ joy our first day of match play saw victories over Bucks and Berks but the next day we lost to Hampshire and Oxfordshire. However the Herts girls were able to hold their head high knowing that they had played good scratch golf and given their opponents a run for their money!! In the end Hampshire were the deserved, overall winners.

Under the brilliant leadership of Stephanie all the Herts girls wanted to do well for each other and for the team. Whilst the matches were played in a competitive and determined spirit, off the course there was lots of laughter and a very friendly atmosphere. Everyone involved with Herts Girls Golf was enormously proud of our girls.

Congratulations to Stephanie and her team and especially to Laura Roff who won the coveted Bagpuss prize as the most successful player on the team. Incidentally all the team will still be juniors next year.

Many thanks go to everyone involved in running the competition, especially Rowena Hemmings, and to Junior Committee members Kim Bristow, Viv Ofstedahl, Jean Knowles and Loraine Kaye. Thanks also to all those Herts supporters who came along (wearing pink) to cheer on the campaign, the most vocal of whom was Charlotte Davies, an ex junior team player.

An enormous ‘Thank You’ must also go to Aldenham Golf Club management, staff and members. To quote one of the other County Junior Organisers ‘Aldenham did a fantastic job, everyone was friendly and helpful, and the food was wonderful throughout.’ We couldn’t have asked for more.
