Second Team 2008 Reports

2nd Team Match v Oxfordshire  - 21st  April 2008

The last second team match of the season was held on the High Course at Moor Park against Oxfordshire on Monday 21st April. The day started well with some impressive foursomes play with all the matches going to the 18th. Our team had a good mix of youth and experience and the young pairing of Steph and Lucy Glyn won. Unfortunately Lucinda and Lucy Goddard found the bunker on the short hole which left a tricky shot to a difficult pin position and both they, and Jeanne and Laura lost. So we needed to get some points back in the afternoon matches.
Oxfordshire had been undefeated in the last two years which is quite some achievement and perhaps it was just as well we did not know this before we went out! Lucy Goddard had three birdies in the first eight holes including a wonderful holed chip shot at the eighth in front of an appreciative audience and she went on to win. Steph was the only Herts player to win morning and afternoon and although Jeanne battled hard she lost on the 17th. The other singles matches were all won by Oxfordshire who went on to finish 6-3 winners overall, a disappointing result which did not actually reflect some of the excellent play.

 2nd Team Match v Berkshire  - 13th April 2008

The second team played against Berkshire at Temple Golf Club on Sunday 13th April. We arrived to mist covering the view from the 1st tee but fortunately this cleared before play started and we were lucky again with the weather later in the day as it rained heavily both during the lunch break and after the matches had finished.
The morning foursomes results finished close. Morag Morrison, who is recovering from a back injury and Rosie Goodson, on her debut for the second team had a good win 3/2. Andrea King and Lucinda Mileham lost 2/1 against a seasoned Berkshire pairing. Julie Dyke and Lauren Bradford went to the 18th tee all square, but unfortunately lost the hole to finish one down.
So there was all to play for in the afternoon singles, and for a while it looked most likely that we would be able to turn the result around. Lucinda, Julie and Morag all won. Lauren lost despite two excellent birdies and Rosie lost so it was all down to Andrea's match which went to the 18th. Her opponent hit a long drive to the short par 4 and capitalised to win the hole.
So despite winning three singles each, Herts lost 5/4.

 2nd Team Match v Surrey  - 15th March 2008

The second team match against Surrey was played at Bishop's Stortford on Saturday 15th March. Once again there was a good mix of youth and experience in the team and four players from Old Fold Manor in the side.
The match was finely poised at lunchtime with the scores level at 2 wins each. The afternoon games were also close and finished in very gloomy wet conditions. I saw some great shots throughout the day including two great tee shots on the short 8th hole from Lucinda and Julia. There were also some lovely up and downs from awkward places which goes to show that the training from Keith and Jeff and the practice is paying off!
Andrea did well in her first County match to win in the morning and halve in the afternoon; and Hollie had a great fight back to halve her singles, having been three down. Despite the overall win for Surrey there was some very encouraging golf.

 2nd Team match v Bucks - 8th March 2008, Welwyn Garden City

The second team played their first match of the season against Buckinghamshire in blustery conditions at Welwyn Garden City Golf Club on Saturday 8th March.
The morning foursomes results were all close.
Julie was proud to be playing for the County on her home course in her year as Lady Captain but unfortunately although she and Lucy Goddard fought back from being 3 down, they lost on the last.

A previously tried pairing of Lucinda and Liz won as did the new pairing of young players - junior County Captain Steph playing with Lucy Glyn.

In the afternoon singles the players from both teams did well to play some excellent golf despite the wind and rain. There were wins for Lucinda, Steph and Lucy Glyn; Julie again fought back for a halved match and Liz and Lucy Goddard both lost on the 17th. It was a good start to the season and a win against a team we lost 7/2 to last year.
