English Girls U13
Champion!!! |
|
Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted)
is the English Girls U13 Champion – a
fantastic achievement!! |
|
Three
Hertfordshire girls entered the U13
championship held at Market Rasen - Alice
Hewson (Berkhamsted) and Ella
Ofstedahl and Sian Hulse (Mill
Green). All the girls made the cut with
Alice and Ella in 6th and 8th
place. Alice then shot a one over par final
round of 74, to win the championship
outright. |
|
For more details click
here. |
|
Abraham Trophy - Sian was also in the
Abraham Trophy and did extremely well with a
score of 83, which was well below her
handicap. |
|
U15 Championship – Hertfordshire entries
were Nicola Callander (Mill Green)
and Zara Houchin (The Hertfordshire).
Zara failed to make the cut but Nicola
started really well with a 3 over 76.
Unfortunately she struggled in the last 2
rounds and finished joint 26th. |
|
U18 Championship -
Lauren Hunt (Letchworth) and Emily
Chan (South Herts) both entered but
neither made the cut. |
|
U16 National Schools
Championships |
|
(Sponsored by
NASUWT) |
|
 |
Two girls from
Hertfordshire travelled up to Delemere
Forest GC in Cheshire to play in the
National Schools U16 Championship. Both
Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) and Ella
Ofstedahl (Mill Green) qualified as
outright winners of their respective
County Schools finals; Alice from
Hertfordshire and Ella from Bedfordshire. |
|
The course was a test of accuracy and
endurance; some difficult rough to contend
with and very ‘undulating’ fairways all
accounting for its 73 standard scratch
rating. Both girls struggled a little in the
morning round and found the putting
challenging, however Alice still finished
with a 78 and after a 43 on the front,
Ella’s 38 on the back left her on 81. |
|
The lunch break clearly re-energized them as
both girls were able to improve on their
morning results in the second and final
afternoon round. Alice managed a run of
birdies on the back nine and then sustained
her momentum to shoot a wonderful level par
72 equalling the best afternoon score by the
eventual winner. Ella was right behind with
the joint 3rd best score in the
afternoon after her improved putting stats
lead to an impressive 2 over par 74. |
|
Both girls shot up the final leader board
and out of the 24 girls participating, Alice
finished 3rd and Ella 7th.
As two of the youngest there and against
some tough competition (23 of 24 were single
figure handicaps), both performed
brilliantly on the day – Well done! |
|
Hertfordshire v Essex – 17 July 2010 |
 |
Another excellent result
for the County girls!! |
|
|
On paper the match
against Essex looked a bit one sided as
Essex fielded an extremely strong team
(1st
team handicaps were 5 or under). However
the Herts Girls put up a valiant battle
and the eventual outcome was a very
respectable half with three wins each.
There were some excellent performances
the most notable being Nicola Bennett
who came back from 3 down to win her
match on the 18th
and Sian Hulse (h/c 15) who only
lost her match on the 17th. |
|
The second team result
was a draw as the third match had to be
discounted due to Hertfordshire only
fielding one player. However, credit
must go to Tania Castle in the 3rd
match who took on both Essex girls and
firmly beat them on the 14th. |
|
|
A great result and well done
to all! |

Another great performance by Emily Chan
(South Herts) at the Shire Trophy when she
shot 78 to come 2nd in the Girls
event and 13th overall. The
winner of the Girls event was Miranda Brain
of Cambs & Hunt with 74 (CSS was 74). |

Junior Championship – 4 July at
Berkhamsted |
|
 |
We were delighted to be
at Berkhamsted for our top event of the
year and we weren’t disappointed. The
course was in superb condition but the
recent dry weather and gusty winds made
it a severe test for all concerned. |
| Despite the conditions a
number of girls got off to great starts
and after 12 holes they had only dropped
1 or 2 shots each. Then the conditions
started to tell and it was a case of who
could scramble home the best. |

The deserved
winner was Emily Chan (South
Herts) who, despite some wayward shots,
made some very good pars in the final
holes. |

Hertfordshire v Norfolk – 26 June 2010
|
 |
We were able to field our ‘top’ team against
Norfolk at Chesfield Downs and despite the
heat there was some very impressive play.
Two of the Norfolk girls have been selected
for England Schools and also represented
their county at CMW, so we knew that they
would be difficult to beat. |
|
Norfolk’s top player, Amber Ratcliffe, was
on superb form with at least one eagle and
numerous birdies to give her a decisive win
over Lauren Hunt. However Emily Chan
and Nicola Bennett both fought back
well to earn very important ‘halves’ while
the other girls all won. |
|
In the 2nd team, Tania and Hayley
lost a very tough match 2&1 but Sian and
Marie simply out drove their opponents to
win 4&3. The heat was eventually too much
for the last group who were happy to secure
a half. |

Selected for England!! |
|
Congratulations to Alice Hewson of
Berkhamsted for her superb performance at
the English Schools Championship at John
O’Gaunt on 22 June 2010. |
|
Alice shot 75 and 77 (CSS was 74 both times)
including a hole in one, another eagle and 7
birdies. She came 3rd in the
overall championship, 4 behind the winner
Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough). |
|
She has now been selected to represent
England Schools in the annual international
against Scotland at Fairhaven in September. |
|
Note: |
|
Emily Chan of South Herts also took
part in the championships representing South
of England, having qualified via Middlesex
Schools. |
|
Ella Ofstedahl of Mill Green won the
Bedfordshire Schools U16 Girls Championships
and will now go onto to represent them at
the National U16 Schools final in Cheshire
in July. |

The 1st team were pleased to
secure a 3-3 draw with excellent results
from Lauren Hunt and Nicola Callander. Ella
Ofstedahl battled well but lost on the 17th
while the star performer was Sian Hulse.
Sian, along with Hayley Shaw, was making her
first appearance for the 1st team
and in a closely fought match made birdie on
the par 3 17th to secure her win. |
|
In the 2nd team Amber Dyke and
Chloe Hammond were making their first
appearance at any county event. Both girls
were very nervous but played well and took
their opponents to the 18th
before losing 2 down. Earlier Grace Lewis
and Caroline Chapman had lost a hard fought
battle 2&1 while Emily Dorrington and Molly
Doyle enjoyed a relatively comfortable 7&6
win. |

The Herts
Schools Championship took place at
Whitehills on 23 March and sadly only 8
girls took part. Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted)
and Zara Houchin (The Hertfordshire)
came 1st and 2nd
respectively with excellent gross scores of
78 and 80. Zara also won the stableford
prize with 39 points. |
|
Both girls went on to represent Herts in the
South East Championship at Norwich. Alice
shot 80 and 78, while Zara scored 90 & 88.
Alice is 1st reserve for the
National Finals at John O’Gaunt on 20/21
June. |
|
Emily Chan (South Herts) represented
Middlesex in the South of England
Championship at Maidenhead. She shot 75 and
78, and tied for 3rd place. She
will represent the South of England team in
the National Finals – well done! |
|
Ella Ofstedahl (Mill Green) came 3rd
in the Bedfordshire Schools Championship and
was selected to represent Beds in the SE
Championship at Norwich but unfortunately
was not available. However she has been
selected for the National U16 Schools Final
in Cheshire on 19 July. |
|
Herts Ladies County Championship |
 |
Seven junior girls (probably a record!)
entered this year’s Herts Ladies County
Championship. They were Lauren Hunt (Letchworth),
Emily Chan (South Herts), Nicola
Bennett (Porters Park), Alice Hewson
(Berkhamsted), Nicola Callander and
Ella Ofstedahl (Mill Green) and
Zara Houchin (The Hertfordshire). |
|
 |
 |
All
performed very well with Alice
Hewson winning both the Anne Pyke
Trophy and the Pam Lane Salver. Five
girls qualified for the last 16
matchplay rounds and Nicola
Callander almost stole the show by
beating Steph McEvoy and Morag
Morrison to make the semi-finals.
Despite a very good performance she
eventually lost 3&1 to Alison
Franklin, who went on to win the
Championship. For a full report please

Hertfordshire v Middlesex – 9 April 2010
|
|
Our friendly match against Middlesex took
place at Bush Hill Park Golf Club. The
course has lots of very narrow fairways and
a few blind tee shots which made it very
interesting for everyone. |
|
 |
All the matches were close. Ella
Ofstedahl was unlucky to lose to the
final putt on the 18th while
Tania Castle knew the golfing gods were
against her when she lost 2 balls in the
muddy ground despite only just missing the
green. However it was Grace Lewis who
provided the excitement of the day – despite
being 4 up with 4 to play, she managed to
keep her match going to the 18th
where she finally secured the win for
Hertfordshire. It was much needed as the
final result was a draw at 4 – 4 |

Hacienda del Alamo Women’s and Girls’
Festival - Spain |
|
The Spanish
festival, held on 13-20 February, is popular
with many of England’s top players including
Hertfordshire’s Charlie Douglass as it
provides an opportunity to escape the rain
and snow at home in England. However this
year the wind and rain followed the players
south, making the 6,052 yard course
extremely challenging. |
|
There are two separate competitions held
during the week. |
|
The first is the Murcia Open, held over 36
holes. Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) won the
handicap prize (and was 4th
scratch), Nicola Callander (Mill Green) was
3rd and Ella Ofstedahl (Mill
Green) came 8th. |
|
In the equivalent Ladies competition,
Charlie Douglass came 2nd in the
scratch event. |
|
Alice Hewson was the only Hertfordshire
player to stay for the 54 hole Hacienda del
Alamo Open and was rewarded with 3rd
place in the scratch event and 2nd
place on handicap. |
|
Brilliant result – well played everyone!! |
|
Another year!! |
| 2009 was an excellent year
for Herts Junior Girls as we won both the
East Region County league and the Junior
County Match Week against our old
adversaries of Bucks, Berks and Oxfordshire.
The final trophies for the 2009 Order of
Merit were awarded at the recent County AGM.
The winner of the scratch prize was Steph
McEvoy and the handicap winner was
Alice Hewson. Congratulations to both!! |
| In 2010, Steph and 7 other
girls will be entering the senior ranks.
They have made a superb contribution to
Herts Junior golf and we wish them every
success in the future. However this is an
excellent opportunity for the younger girls
to take their places in the junior team. |
| We again have a very full
fixture list with 1st and 2nd
team matches against the East Region, Junior
County Match Week, the Junior Championship
and Spring/Autumn meetings. We also expect
many of the Junior Girls to enter either the
County Championship or the De Paula Cup.
Click for
fixture list. |
| Junior coaching has also
been increased. The Eagle and Birdie squads
begin their sessions in January while
coaching for beginners and high handicap
girls will take place at 8 clubs throughout
the county. See the website for more
details. |
| Congratulations to
Nicola Callander and Ella Ofstedahl
(Mill Green) and Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted)
who have been selected for England Super
Birdie training. |
|
Finally I am
delighted to announce that Lauren Hunt
(Letchworth) will be Junior Captain
for 2010. |
