The Hertfordshire Pearson Trophy Semi-Finals/Final was held at Stocks Golf Club on Wednesday, 28th June. Following weeks of unbroken sunshine and record temperatures, once again the forecast for our Finals’ day was for heavy rain. A low mist over the course greeted us on our arrival. Fortunately, the rain held off until the last tee time, but from then on we had almost constant rain together with an unseasonably low temperature.
This was not to deter the players and there was the usual buzz of excitement around the 1st tee. Gill Graddon, Ladies’ Captain of Stocks Golf Club was our starter for the morning Semi-Finals and she efficiently kept the players to their tee times.
Match 1 Moor Park v Batchworth Park got away to a steady start with both clubs parring the first hole. Match 2 Hadley Wood v Arkley both sent off perfect drives.
After nine holes Moor Park were up in two and all square in two of their first four matches, but down in the remaining three. In the other Semi-Finals, Hadley Wood after nine was down in three of their first four matches but up in the remaining three.
As the matches progressed, the rain continued. The first result in was a win to Moor Park in Match 1 followed by two more wins to Moor Park. Batchworth Park pulled back to three all and with a nail biting finish a putt was sunk on the 17th to win the deciding match.
Meanwhile, Arkley had won their first four matches and the remaining three were called in.
With the deciding match between Moor Park v Batchworth Park going to the 17th and finishing at 2.00pm, the afternoon Final was delayed until 2.30pm. There were two team changes for Batchworth Park and one for Arkley.
Our afternoon starter was Jane Walters, Captain of the Hertfordshire County Ladies’ Golf Association. Batchworth Park won the toss and the matches were all sent off on time.
The results this season have been quite phenomenal and the four teams, Moor Park, Batchworth Park, Hadley Wood and Arkley, had been involved during the Group and Quarter Final stages in exciting matches and had come through nail biting finishes and count backs to have reached this final day of the Hertfordshire Pearson Trophy. Today has been as exciting and we were treated to a wonderful day of golf, the climax of the Hertfordshire Pearson Trophy 2016/2017. Well done to all who played.
Thank you to our two Referees – Liz Perrottet and to Chris Medley who were constantly on hand to answer queries and give rulings where necessary to the players.
Stocks Golf Club were superb hosts and we have received the utmost support and cooperation from the Management and staff in the planning for the day. Everyone has gone out of their way to help wherever possible. Many of the members generously gave up their time and volunteered to be ball spotters. The Head Greenkeeper and his staff had presented the course in excellent condition, mowing the greens in the very early morning following heavy overnight rain.
Hertfordshire County President, Lesley Hewitt presented the two losing Semi-Finalists and the runner up with Rose bowls and Arkley with the Hertfordshire Pearson Trophy.
A fairy tale finish for Arkley and we wish them good luck when they represent Hertfordshire in the Inter County Semi-Finals/Final to be held at Hever Castle Golf Club, Kent, on Thursday, 20th July 2017.
