Played at Knebworth GC Monday 25 September
Berkshire Team Sheree, Linda, Katherine and Tracey Hertfordshire Team Sue, Sandra, Anne and Jackie
with County Captain Jane
On Monday 25 September, nine counties competed for the Team Championship. This annual end of season event is hosted by rotation of the southern counties and this year it was Hertfordshire’s turn to welcome the teams to Knebworth.
The format is teams of 4, scratch medal, the aggregate of best 3 gross scores to count. In the event of a tie the 4th card is taken as the count back card.
Unfortunately the weather was not favourable and the players teed off in the rain and also finished in wet conditions but there was some respite during the day at least.
Of the 36 players who took part, 20 had gross scores of 80 and below, the best score of 74 being that of Hertfordshire and England player Jackie Foster. Several other England players were representing their counties. The css went up to 74.
The winners, by the smallest of margins, one shot, was the Berkshire team with a total aggregate of 232. On 233 Sussex, Kent and Hertfordshire tied for second place in that order if using the 4th card for actual placings. It was a nail biting finish. All results are on the website under “latest competition results” - both the team results and the individual gross and nett scores.
The Knebworth course was presented in superb condition and was very tricky indeed. Our thanks to the whole club for hosting the event and providing the players with a splendid buffet lunch after play.
We look forward to the Championship in 2018 when the hosts will be Middlesex and the venue is Highgate GC. Another tricky and hilly course! Should be fun.
